Elder abuse is a prevalent problem in New Jersey as well as throughout the United States. Unfortunately, many instances of elder abuse go unnoticed, placing vulnerable seniors in what can be an unbearable situation. Because elder abuse is a significant problem, it is important for family members to know the signs of elder abuse so that they can protect their elderly loved ones. Elder abuse encompasses a wide array of conduct towards an elderly person. The abuse can be both physical and emotional, making for a poor quality of life for many victims.
Examples of elder abuse include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Physical abuse;
- Sexual abuse;
- Verbal abuse;
- Emotional abuse;
- Neglect and abandonment; and
- Financial exploitation.
Given that some elderly individuals are not able to fully fight on their behalf without assistance, it is imperative that concerned loved ones spot the signs of abuse and take action if they believe an elderly family member or friend is suffering from some form of elder abuse.
